Chapter Eleven

The airport buzzed with passengers checking in luggage and waiting for their flights as Jimmy helped Kelsey check in her bag. He hated to see her leave. They’d been married for nearly six days, and even though it wasn’t a real marriage, he felt connected to her in a way he hadn’t expected. Was she glad to be going back to school where she wouldn’t have to deal with him?

After he put the suitcase on the scale and the agent behind the counter tagged the bag and whisked it away, he turned to Kelsey. “Looks like you’re set.”

“Yeah.” She didn’t look at him but fiddled with her purse.

“You okay?” He leaned closer so Mitch and Amanda wouldn’t overhear their conversation. “You’re not getting sick, are you?”

Shaking her head, she looked up at him, a little smile curving her mouth. “No, but I sure hope that doesn’t suddenly hit me on the plane. I would feel sorry for the people sitting next to me if I have to use the airsick bag.”

Jimmy put his arm around her shoulders. “I’ll pray that doesn’t happen, for your sake and for theirs.”

Kelsey laughed, and a gratifying sensation filled his chest. He loved it when he could make her laugh, but he couldn’t let himself get too caught up in this marriage. If he was honest with himself though, he’d have to admit he already had, so her leaving was a good thing. While she was gone, he could get his thoughts in order and prepare to share the same house with her but not her bed. He couldn’t forget that night at the B and B and how he’d awakened the next morning with her in his arms. For the rest of the week, he’d lain there at night thinking how right that had felt.

“You two doing okay?” Amanda asked as Kelsey and Jimmy approached.

“Yeah. Why?” Jimmy raised his eyebrows as he looked between Mitch and Amanda.

“I can see you’re sad about this parting.” Amanda gave Kelsey a pat on the arm.

Kelsey looked up at him with a little smile. A knowing look in her eyes said, We’re doing a good job with this make-believe marriage thing. He was thinking it was all too real—his feelings for her. In the beginning, he’d thought it was only a physical attraction. Now that he faced the prospect of being without her, it was completely clear that he already loved her. How had he let that happen in such a short time?

Trying to think about something else, Jimmy checked his phone for the time, then looked at Kelsey. “You’re here in plenty of time to catch your flight. Do you want to sit in the restaurant until you have to go through security?”

Kelsey glanced toward the nearby security checkpoint. “Sure. They aren’t very busy. It won’t take me long to get through.”

Jimmy led the way to a table and pulled out a chair for Kelsey. After everyone was seated, he glanced around the table. “I know we just ate, but we could order a soda.
